Buc Tuocs Uniform Update

We will travel in Class A as usual (like you didn't already know that). Everyone is encouraged to have closed toed shoes on this weekend. While we usually allow Crocs, you might want to have a better pair of shoes on since we will be working with our pioneering logs (they are a bit heavy and you don't want to go home with a smashed toe). We will be building trebuchets to launch water balloons at a target. Please bring both you Green & Red Class B t-shirt as we will be dividing up the troop into two teams.

The Climbing Tower Crew needs to be in their Gray Class B t-shirt.

Scouting For Food

In the Law of the Pack, a cub scout gives good will and in the Boy Scout Promise, a boy scout promises to help other people at all times. By participating in a Scouting for Food program, scouts come a step closer to fulfilling those words. Across the country, in many councils and districts, thousands of troops and packs with millions of scouts involved collect tens of millions of pounds of food which is distributed to needy neighbors.

For the next four weeks (Monday February 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th), Scouts are encouraged to bring canned food to the troop meeting. Mr. Horter will be coordinating the collection again this year. Scouts are asked to bring donations in a plastic Publix type bag w/ their name and patrol clearly marked on the bag . The patrol with the most donations will get to eat Saturday dinner with the Adults on the St. George's Island camp-out

Last year the troop donated 362lbs. of canned food to Bread of the Mighty Food Bank. That averages 5.75lbs. per Scout. Our goal this year is at least 432lbs. That's only 7lbs. per Scout, or 15 cans Campbell's soup.

Belay On...Climbing...Climb On

Scouts & Venture Scouts that have earned the Climbing merit badge, we need your help. We are going to run the climbing tower next weekend at Buc Tuocs. We will need at least six (6) people to help belay climbers. If you are interested in helping, we will have training/refresher meeting tomorrow evening at the Gainesville Rock Gym.

If you are able to make it, please send Mr. Horter (horterre@gmail.com) an e-mail so that he knows how many people to expect.

We will meet at the Gainesville Rock Gym at 6:30p. Everyone will need to have waiver signed by their parent(s) in order to climb. A copy of a parent ID will also be necessary to climb. To download the Gainesville Rock Gym Waiver, click here.

Buc Tuocs - Buc Tuocs has been scaled down to a single day event this year due to a swamp fire near Camp Shands. We will be doing a pioneering project, running the climbing tower, and maybe a few other activities. Our plan is to leave very early in the morning and return late in the evening. More details will be available as our plans solidify.

Canoe Trip Information

Please note that we will have limited space for gear.
Please pay attention to the weather .
Try to get a tent buddy as camping space will be tight........

This should be treated like a back packing trip with a skosh more room.
We will not be bringing the trailer or cooking patrol boxes.

You will need a cook buddy. If your assigned buddy has not contacted you, let me know. If you want specific snacks please bring them. We will be using back packing stoves to prepare meals or dutch ovens .

Bring your own mess kit, and personal gear.

Wilderness First Responder Training

Wilderness First Responder training will be offered at Paynes Prairie State Park beginning at 5 pm on December 16th and running through noon on December 24th. Minimum age to attend is 16. Cost is $500 per person. Registration is available on line but you have to send in a check as well to be officially registered. Minimum class size for them to hold the class is 6. What is OA?

In the most basic sense, this is Scouting's honor society. OA began in 1915 to best recognise Scouts who exemplify the Scout Spirit the most among their peers. Three levels are recognized in OA in terms of membership status - Ordeal, Brotherhood, and Vigil. All members, adults or boys, start at Ordeal. The purposes of OA are to:

Recognize those who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and through that recognition cause others to conduct themselves in a way that warrants similar recognition.
Promote camping, responsible outdoor adventure, and environmental stewardship as essential components of every Scout’s experience, in the unit, year-round, and in summer camp.
Develop leaders with the willingness, character, spirit and ability to advance the activities of their units, our Brotherhood, Scouting, and ultimately our nation.
Crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

Troop 432 members are associated with the Apieka Chapter of the Echockotee Lodge of the North Florida Council.

How do I qualify for membership?

To even qualify is a difficult feat. Conforming to the idea of letting Boy Scouts be boy-led, OA members are not selected by adult leaders. Instead, the Scouts "elect" their members in the last few months of the year (November or December). Several requirements must be satisfied to qualify for the first step into OA membership:

Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.
Experience 15 days and nights of camping during a two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, and only one, long-term camp consisting of six consecutive days and five nights of resident camping.
Youth must be under 21, be First Class or higher, and, following approval by the Scoutmaster, be elected by the youth members of the troop.
Adults (over 21) registered in the BSA and meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to the lodge adult selection committee. Adult selection is based on the ability to perform the necessary functions to help the Order fulfill its purpose, and is not for recognition of service, including current or prior positions.

We are still looking for some Scouts to help out with the Talbot Elementary Carnival, November 3rd from 4:00p - 7:00p.

The school is looking for 4-5 Scouts to help run a Recycling booth during the carnival. Volunteers will need to take tickets, run the game and hand out prizes (provided) with some enthusiasm :0) for the little kids. Every volunteer will get a free food and drink voucher.

If you are interested in earning some Community Service hours, please contact Mr. Morrow or Mr. Horter for details. You will need to be at Talbot Elementary from 3:45p to 7:00p.

When: Saturday, October 22nd at 8:00AM
Where: John Mahon Nature Park. 4300 Block W Newberry Road Gainesville, FL

Lunch and drinks provided.

Project includes: Removing an exotic plant Ardisia. These exotic plants slowly take over and disrupt the balance of nature as well as take over other native plants.

Work will be done in a dry land area. We expect it to be a cool cloudy day around 76 degrees and there might be a few mosquitoes. Please dress appropriately.

Project includes: Removing an exotic plant Ardisia. These exotic plants slowly take over and disrupt the balance of nature as well as take over other native plants.

Work will be done in a dry land area. We expect it to be a cool cloudy day around 76 degrees and there might be a few mosquitoes. Please dress appropriately.

Notes:

Fishing - Medium saltwater fishing gear should work well. Saltwater fishing in the St. Mary’s Sound and beach fishing on the Atlantic should be good. Potential catches include flounder, redfish, sea trout, and whiting.
Service Project – Fort Clinch State Park maintains an off-road bike trail that parallels the park entrance drive. Periodically the trail needs maintenance to help spread out the wear and tear on the trail from the bikes. Our job will be to be strategically place mulch on sections of the trail to stabilize soft areas and cover any exposed roots. We may also be trimming some vegetation along the trail. The park will provide all the materials for the trail maintenance. Please bring gloves, hats, sunscreen, and a canteen.
Weather - Mr. Horter & Mr. Pearson are bringing their hammocks. It will rain. Pack for fall weather and rain. Actually, Mr. Pearson should only be charged with this blemish. Mr. Horter has never slept in his hammock and had it rain.
Packing - If you need help/suggestions on what to pack, check the troop web site or click here. Remember, we are only going camping for two (2) nights. Only bring what you need.

Swimming Merit Badge

We will have the first meeting for the Swimming Merit Badge on Thursday, September 29 at 5:30 pm at the Northeast Pool, 1100 NE 14th Street.
There will be a $3.15 cost to get into the pool for each Scout. Adults that will be watching will not need to pay.

Popcorn Sales Start September 17th!

Can you believe that Popcorn Season is already here! I know you look forward to this just like Christmas. It’s true. The official start to sell popcorn is Friday September 16. Order forms will be sent to all registered scouts in the mail sometime before the kickoff day.

Once again, your troop committee has voted no prizes (the prizes are cheap looking anyway). I repeat no prizes. Only prizes (or called incentives) awarded will be those from NF Council.

Troop prizes include:

The troop champion will get to throw whipped cream pies into Mr. Morrow and me!
The patrol who sells the most will get to eat with the adults on a campout TBA
Other prizes include an I Tunes gift certificate and other cool stuff (“CYCLONE”, water bottles etc.)

Are you aware that instead of prizes, each scout will get 35% of the profits each scout sells! They (and especially the parents) can use the money to help pay for summer camps, campouts or recharter fees! After all the money is collected and counted by BSA and Trail’s End Popcorn Co., the money is sent to Troop 432 treasurers and put into each scout’s troop bank to be used for above. It can’t be used to give cash, buy games or scout equipment. So parents-encourage your scouts to sell. It will help them as well as you. (Ask the Saltzgiver family how George’s sales have helped him)

Exciting incentives awarded by council include:

Sell $ 1500 worth and get a $50 gift card from Wal-Mart or Amazon.com
Sell $ 2500 worth and get Trail’s End college scholarship and $50 gift certificates
Sell $ 600 worth and get a “Cyclone”

If you Fill It Up (fill up your order form) you may:
1. Qualify for a weekly drawing for an Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect.
2. “I Filled It Up” Sports Experience @ the University of Jacksonville( limited to Grades 1-8 )

For “Fill It Up “make sure I get your filled up order form so I can send it in for the computer drawing and Sports Experience Day.

Also 33% of the profits go the local council to help improve your BSA campsites. Ask Mr. Mintz what Camp Shands used to look like!

You can sell to your relatives, your mom and dad’s coworkers and neighbors. You can even sell online to relatives and friends out of town!

We have our campout dates, we have our reservations, we are ready to do some camping.

Here's what you have to look forward to:

October 7th - 9th - Fun in the Sun - we're going to the Beach. It's back to Fort Clinch State Park in the northeast corner of Florida (Fernandina Beach). We tried to make a go of it at Hanna Park in Jacksonville, but they have a limit of 30 campers in their Youth Camp, and we know everyone wants to go to the beach, so we opted to find a place that can hold all of us (we usually have 45-50 people per camp-out). We'll likely be doing a service project in the morning and spending the afternoon on the beach. For you history buffs, the Army of the Confederate States of America will be occupying the Fort that weekend, so you're welcome to go visit the soldiers if you'd rather avoid the sun, the water, the sand and the Frisbee on the beach.

November 11th - 13th - By popular demand we are returning to Florida Caverns State Park in Marianna. We had such a good time last year, the scouts requested a repeat. Friday the 11th is a school and state holiday, so we might actually be able to leave GUMC on time! We might even be able to leave earlier in the day depending on our schedules. Do not miss this camp-out! The highlight will be Saturday night's custom flashlight tour of the Caverns. The park rangers turn off all the lights, so it's just you and your headlamp (and 20 other people) exploring the caves.

December 9th - 11th - After the past two years at Gold Head, we are moving the Troop 432 Webelos Invitational Campout back to O'Leno State Park in High Springs. Just a short drive from Gainesville, O'Leno has a wonderful Youth Camp and thousands of acres of places to play. This is our chance to show off for the 2nd year Webelos that may become our newest Boy Scouts next year. The food is always great on this camp-out since the way to a scout's parent is through their stomach (or something like that).

This year we would like to try and get everyone signed up early so we can get our tour permits submitted on time and can plan transportation better. We will also be assigning two adults to lead each campout so we can divide the labor and have a backup in case one cannot attend the campout. And more importantly, we need Grubmasters for the adult patrol for each campout. It works well to have a Grubmaster in Charge (GMC) and several Assistant Grubmasters (AGM). So if you want to be the GMC so you can delegate all the work to the AGMs, then you need to sign up first!

What: Peter Swanger’s Eagle project - to build two wooden utility bridges for Meditation Trail behind Abiding Savior Lutheran and Covenant Baptist Churches

When: Saturday, August 27th (first Saturday after school starts)

Where: Abiding Savior Lutheran Church, 9700 West Newberry Rd. http://www.abidingsavior.info/

Lunch and drinks provided.

Project includes primarily placing and assembly of two wooden bridges including the decking. Bridges are made of 2x6 lumber and 3/8” hardware.

Work will be done in a wetland area. We expect it to be hot and there will be mosquitoes. Please dress appropriately.

Eagle Project Dedication

Thanks to the assistance from Troop 432, Matt Stanton’s Eagle Scout Gazebo project at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park was completed ahead of schedule.

The staff at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park would like to invite all members of Troop 432 to join us as we officially open and dedicate the gazebo in memory of Matt’s grandfather, park volunteer Dominick Martino.

Join us at the Gazebo, on the La Chua Trail boardwalk, this Saturday, August 6th, at 10AM.

Again, thank you for helping make this project possible. It provides a real benefit to all visitors to Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.

Eagle Project - Last Call

Matt Stanton still needs some help this weekend to finish up his Eagle Project at Payne Prairie. If you are able to help, he is planning on working from 7:00a to about 3:00p Saturday and Sunday.

Matt Stanton’s Eagle Project at Paynes Prairie is due to start Saturday!

Over a year and a half in the planning, Eagle Scout Candidate Matt Stanton’s dream is to build an interpretive/educational pavilion on Paynes Prairie in honor of his grandfather, Dominick Martino. Dominick spent the last years of his life as a volunteer at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park sharing his love of the Prairie and his photographs of nature with the park visitors. La Chua Trail was his home, and he spent countless hours teaching the visitors about the Prairie and its wildlife. A shaded interpretive pavilion on La Chua Trail is a very fitting memorial for Dominick. Matt Stanton is traveling with his family, but not his scout troop, from Pennsylvania to spend July 16th – July 25th building this dream. To help make this dream come true, Matt has been raising money through scrap metal drives, collecting aluminum cans, and good old-fashioned pleading. The local lumberyards are delivering truckloads of lumber and roofing material to the Prairie. The park has installed the tall pilings to support the structure, and the Friends of Paynes Prairie are helping to fill in the funding gaps.

But what we need now, are BOY SCOUTS! Since Matt could not afford to bring his fellow scouts from Pennsylvania , Troop 432 offered to provide our scouts (and adults of course!) to get this project built. Attached is a sign-up sheet in Word Format with some additional information. You can fill in your names and preferred workdays, or you can just email me with your names and preferences. We would like to spread the help out over the length of the project, so there will be no twiddling of thumbs on this project! The park will be providing extra fluids, and the Friends of Paynes Prairie will be providing lunch, so we need to work up a schedule as best we can. It’s going to be hot out there, so most of the work will probably be in the mornings.

The work site is near the beginning of the La Chua Trail at the Alachua Sink where all the water from eastern Gainesville flows into your aquifer (so don’t spill anything in it). This is called the “North Rim entrance to Paynes Prairie” and is 4801 Camp Ranch Road, also known as SE 17th Street. It is south of Bouleware Springs – just head south on SE 15th Street from University Ave for a couple of miles until the road turns to the left – you go straight instead of turning and enter the North Rim entrance to Paynes Prairie. Let me know if you want a map! You’ll have to get your own compass.

Drive down the entrance drive, past the public parking area to the second gate (which has an electronic keypad). Enter #3757 to open the gate (and incur the jealous stares of the park visitors who have to pay to get into parks). You can park behind the first building you come to (just turn before the building and follow the road around behind the building and park in the grass. The work site is further down the same road, through a farm gate at the horse barn where you jump onto the La Chua Trail. Follow the elevated boardwalk until you hear hammers.

Brian Carswell will have his Eagle Project Sunday, June 19th from 9:00a to 4:00p at the Florida Museum of Natural History. He will be planting Blue-eyed grass at the Native Plants Butterfly garden. Six volunteers are needed to help with the project. Volunteers should bring work gloves, shovels, and a water bottle

School's Out For Summer!

We will also postpone the Troop Committee Meeting that was scheduled for Monday evening until later this summer.

Cub Scout Day Camp

Parents,

Gainesville's Cub Scout Day Camp is at the point of being canceled this year because we don't have adult volunteers. We have 2 full time volunteers and 4 that can give us a day or two. We need approx. 25 adults per day to safely run this day camp. If you can give us a day or five please email us at alachuadaycamp2011@gmail.com and go to www.nfcscouting.org and click on the day camp link for alachua(westwood) and fill out an adult volunteer form. If you can give us 5 days you get a free t-shirt. Help us keep the camp open. Camp is June 13-17 at Westwood Middle School.

We are also in need of:

5 gallon water coolers
pop ups
rain flies
and folding tables

Derek Li's Eagle Project is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2011 from 9:00a to 4:00p. We will be beatifying 2 small joined fields at LMS by installing benches and planting plants. The field is near the track-field to the left of the front entrance.

What to bring: Class B uniform

Breakfast, Lunch, and water will be provided.

The project qualifies for Community Service Hours and for Scouting Activities requirement for First and Second Class ranks.

Backpacker - Get Out More Tour

Get Out More is a one-of-a kind mobile tour that brings the pages of Backpacker to life for audiences nationwide. From April to December, Backpacker’s experienced Get Out More road team will travel the country to educate consumers about the skills and equipment they need to Get Out More!
